Job Description




The environment of a plumber is dependent on the weather and other tradesmen.  Frequently the environment will be dusty and filled with hazardous materials that require PPE.  Further, there are times when it is difficult to communicate due to the tools and equipment used on the job site.PPE includes dust mask, earplugs, face shield, respirator, rubber gloves, safety glasses, safety goggles, steel toed shoes.


Employees work in a team environment even if they are working on a project individually; most frequently the employees work in a team to complete the project.

All plumbing technicians must refer to the Uniform Plumbing Code, OSHA, HazMat, MSHA, as well as blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and building codes.

  • Assembles (pipe sections, tubing, fittings) by using materials (couplings, clamps, screws) in order to complete a piping system.
  • Locates leaks in piping system by filling pipes and fixtures with water and air using an air compressor and hose in order to verify correct installation.
  • Reviews, understands, and applies information from job documents (i.e, blueprints, building codes, shop drawings, specifications) by visually examining the items in order to ensure correct installation and to determine work details and procedures.
  • Inspects structures by visually examining the job site and verifying with drawings and blueprints in order to plan the sequence of installation.
  • Documents job status by recording information on a form in order to communicate to stakeholders and to establish evidence for procedure.
  • Locates and marks the positions of pipe components (e.g., connections, passage holes) by using measuring instruments and by cross referencing information to the job documents in order to install the plumbing according to specifications.
  • Measures pipe by using tape measure in order to match the actual to specifications.
  • Cuts pipe using pipe cutters in order to install the piping according to job documents.
  • Threads pipe using a threading machine and oiler in order to connect pipe.
  • Bends pipe by using a pipe bender in order to connect pipe.
  • Grooves pipe using a mechanical groover in order to create joints.
  • Installs pipe assemblies (e.g., fittings, valve) using a soldering torch in order to complete installations.
  • Operates machinery (i.e., forklifts, skidsteer, backhoe, platform lift) by applying operating instructions and machinery specifications to actual usage in order to dig, install overhead and underground piping, and to move heavy items.
  • Solders, screws, welds, and glues pipe components by torching, screwing, and applying plastic solvent to the specified components in order to connect and complete pipe installation.
  • Designs hangers by applying information from job documents and from the Uniform Plumbing Code in order to complete an installation.
  • Will be required to work independently and be able to keep from one (1) to three (3) apprentices productive.  May be required to be crew leader, overseeing from one (1) to ten (10) fitter/welders and apprentices.
